Usually, we aim to introduce you to classy, locally-owned restaurants & attractions in Oklahoma. However, there's a place in Texas that we just have to share. It may not be fancy (well, it is relatively speaking to other rest stops), but it's a lot of fun for a variety of reasons.

Buc-ee's is unquestionably the most well-known convenience store franchise in Texas. People don't rave about a gas station without something special about it. Think of Buc-ee's as a mega gas station merged with a mini Walmart, where EVERYTHING is branded with the goofiest beaver mascot (they seem to be in on the joke).

Out of the 40 Buc-ee's locations, 35 are in Texas. Known for their massive size, quantity of gas pumps, famously clean restrooms, variety & quality of food (for a gas station), their ubiquitous mascot, and the world's longest car wash (Katy, TX location), Buc-ee's is a 24/7 respite (or a destination in itself) for the road warrior. Their no-freight trucks policy means they're family travel-focused, so you won't be dodging semis in the parking lot.

Denton's Buc-ee's doesn't break any records at 50,000 sqft with 96 gas pumps, but compared to anything in Oklahoma, it's still "Texas-big." The largest Buc-ee's are in Luling, TX, and Tennessee at about 75,000 sqft with 120 pumps each. Somehow, Buc-ee's hasn't expanded into Oklahoma, so the closest option means a 2-½ hour drive to Denton. Can we get a petition for a Buc-ee's here?

For us, a day trip to Buc-ee's means picking up a few sandwiches from its main draw—the Texas Round-Up BBQ meat counter in the center of the store. The "chefs" announce loudly through the store, "Fresh brisket on the chopping block!" to let you know a fresh set of brisket, pulled pork, bacon club, sausage, turkey, and fried chicken sandwiches are being prepared.

On the opposite side of the Round-Up is Buc-ee's candy & fudge counter where a wide variety of fudge (praline, mint chocolate, key lime, blueberry cheesecake, and more) is served piece-by-piece or packed into a sampler box. Pick up a paper cone of warm, cinnamon sugar pecans, almonds, or cashews at the counter, too!

There are two stops to make for the jerky enthusiast: The wall of jerky where a variety of flavors hangs (our recent favorite is Jalapeño Honey), and the jerky "deli" where real, thick strips of jerky are served individually from the deli case.

You'll need to pick up a bag of Beaver Nuggets for the way home: traditionally honey-flavored corn puffs, but also available in cinnamon and savory & spicy flavors.

You can't complete your visit to Buc-ee's without a visit to the merchandise side of the store. Both men and women can find something of interest in the home decor and outdoor/sporting areas, both with your standard, unbranded wares. But the real fun, especially for the kids (and pets), is all of the Buc-ee the Beaver branded merch. Shirts, shorts, swimwear, mugs & glasses, stuffed toys, dog toys, camping chairs, thermal totes, even BBQ smokers in a variety of sizes—if you can slap a beaver logo on it, Buc-ee's has it…with Buc-ee printed on it.

You have to leave with some sort of Buc-ee paraphernalia (it's always nice to get a "Hey! Buc-ee!" when you're wearing his face on a shirt…especially in Oklahoma). Our last visit had us leaving with a Buc-ee coffee mug, a dog toy, and a plushie for the baby niece.

Buc-ee's is perhaps the most American & Texan venue—gas, BBQ, junk food, and rampantly-branded consumerism centered around a mascot…all dialed up to 11. It's a haven for the traveler, fun for the kids, and an oddity & truly American experience for any foreign guests. If you're lucky, you might even see Buc-ee himself and get a picture with him!
