Iron Star Urban BBQ, nestled in the heart of Oklahoma City at NW Shartel & 36th St, is the perfect spot for anyone craving a mix of fine dining and true smokehouse flavor. Open since 2002, the restaurant’s rustic charm, with its warm wood floors and brick walls, brings you back to the Old West, fittingly named after Belle Starr, the legendary female outlaw. It's a no-nonsense barbecue joint with just a touch of upscale flair, making it an ideal spot for work gatherings or a casual yet refined dining experience.
As regulars at Iron Star, we recently celebrated a special occasion there—Ms. Harriet, the magic behind keeping Flotilla Real Estate Partners looking fresh each week, celebrated her birthday, and her favorite spot didn’t disappoint.
We kicked things off with their deviled eggs, topped with a pepper ceviche and fresh scallions, a unique twist on a classic Southern starter. For a refreshing lunchtime cocktail, the "Down the Hatch"—featuring Hatch green chile-infused Monte Alban tequila, peach puree, lime, and Triple Sec—was the perfect spicy-sweet combination.
Choosing our entrees was tough, as Iron Star’s menu is loaded with tempting options. We almost went for the brisket burnt ends (which also make a cameo in the burnt end queso appetizer!), but instead landed on two fantastic choices: a healthy grilled Atlantic salmon, served with their decadent mac and cheese, and the smoked chicken melt—a sweet and spicy delight with BBQ sauce, melted jack and cheddar, smoked tomato, mayo, red onions, and jalapeño chow-chow, all sandwiched between toasted bread.
But what really stole the show? The whole fried okra. A true Oklahoman favorite, these aren’t your typical bite-sized pieces—they serve up the whole okra, fried to perfection. A side dish that stands out on its own.
While we didn’t save room for dessert, Iron Star’s offerings would have been a hard decision between the double chocolate bread pudding or the fried peach pie with salted caramel and vanilla bean ice cream.
