This review marks our first visit to their new, updated location just across Western Avenue, and we were eager to see how the institution balanced its storied past with its modern present.

Atmosphere: Trading Cozy Charm for Sleek Space

For decades, Tokyo occupied a charmingly small, converted white house at 7516 N Western, famous for its "hole-in-the-wall" feel and delightfully intimate, low-table tatami rooms. The atmosphere was tight, busy, and full of personality—the kind of grit and age that made the experience unique.

The new location, situated at 7512 N Western, is undeniably an upgrade in terms of space and cleanliness. It feels modern, inviting, and clearly positions the restaurant as a Japanese bistro with class. The spacious layout allows for greater distance between tables, a welcome change for many. Crucially, the tradition continues: Tokyo still offers the private, floor-seating tatami rooms, now with a fresh, updated look. While the new digs are impressive and polished—reflecting the upscale Nichols Hills neighborhood ➜—we found ourselves missing the cramped, charismatic soul of the original building. Other long-time patrons have noted this same feeling of "Grandma's house" nostalgia being replaced by a sophisticated, somewhat more sterile environment.

Cocktails: Mixology Surprises and Classic Hits

The drink menu offers creative twists, which we sampled in pursuit of a new favorite. The Tokyo Tea promised a twist on the Long Island Iced Tea, but the surprising addition of green apple liqueur missed the mark for our palate. The Sunflower Martini, a sweet mix of pineapple and peach liqueurs, leans heavily toward the saccharine side.

However, the bar shines when it keeps things balanced. The Tokyo Mule—blending spicy ginger beer, sour lime, and shochu—was a clean, refreshing, and perfectly executed cocktail. We ultimately found success with the Iwai Sour.

On our special birthday visit (downsized from our traditional New Year's Eve 100-piece wooden boat order to a smaller wooden bridge presentation), the fish quality was impeccable. We enjoyed a selection of classic and specialty rolls:

• Rolls: Rock ’n’ Roll, Tokyo, Oklahoma Dynamite, Indonesian Dynamite, and Miami Vice.

• Nigiri: Fresh tuna, salmon, and octopus.

The fish was consistently fresh, prepared artfully, and never disappointing. The classic nigiri selection was a testament to the kitchen’s ability to handle raw fish with the respect it deserves.

We finished the birthday celebration with a time-honored tradition: the deep-fried green tea ice cream. This substantial dessert, drizzled with chocolate and topped with whipped cream and a cherry, remains a favorite celebratory indulgence.
