Royal Bavaria is a German restaurant & beergarten that's been a longtime staple of the Moore/Norman area since 1992! It's a bit of a hidden gem—located on Sooner Road, just north Indian Hills Road. We thought it would be a great place to visit to bring to the attention of our clients who may not know about it.

We admit, we didn't do our due diligence when making our impromptu decision to eat here—Royal Bavaria is meant to be an experience. Our visit at 5:00 PM (right when they open) and in May, meant not many people had shown up yet, and we'd be sitting inside due to the heat. Being a beergarten, the true experience of Royal Bavaria means sitting outside at longtables, enjoying beer from their own brewery with live music playing, and in the company of a large group of others. Learn from our mistake! Call ahead to see when there will be live music, visit in the evening when it’s cool, and sit outside with the crowds.

Of course we started with beers brewed right in the restaurant's own brewery. You can get a flight of samplers, or go all-in and drink from a 1-, 2-, or 3-liter boot (yes, a giant glass boot). There’s even a “Cola Weizen” beer & Coke combo which is a refreshing way to enjoy beer on a hot day!

When it comes to the food—it’s decidedly German. It doesn't photograph well; it's not meant to be pretty, but rather fill you up. Meat & gravy is the standard here, supplemented with potatoes, spätzle (German pasta), sauerkraut, and more meat. If you’re not familiar with German food, you may want to do a little research on what the staples are (such as schnitzel, spätzle, and blaukraut) as menu items are listed in their native German titles, and their English descriptions can only go so far to help you understand what you're ordering.

If you’re unfamiliar with German food, and looking for the safest bet, we recommend ordering from the “Würstl” section of the menu—which are sausages (bratwurst), and all come with sauerkraut. There is a bratwurst sampler! TIP: If you’ve never tried blaukraut, you must try it! Substitute the sauerkraut with it if you’re looking something sweeter, and not sour. We didn’t have any schnitzel (fried pork loin), but that’s a safe bet, too.

Other menu options tend to be variants of slow-roasted beef or pork with rich sauces or gravies—again, this is a meat-lover’s paradise! We did have a beef stew “goulash”, and there is a vegetarian spätzle with Swiss cheese & cream sauce.

German desert can’t be missed, though. We brought home a chocolate bread pudding and cheesecake, but if you’re going for the full German experience, then we’d say try the apple strudel.
